BIOGRAPHY

Media Artist, Italian, 1979.
Paolo Cirio works as media artist in various fields: net-art, plublic-art, video-art, software-art and experimental storytelling. He won prestigius media art awards and his works have been sustained by researches and collaborations, residencies and have been exhibited in international museums and istitutions worldwide. As public speker he delivers lectures and workshops on media tactics in media art events and universities.
Cirio investigates into perception and fabrication of cultural, political and economic realities, which information designs through contents, distribution and modes of media. His primary inspiration is in corporate and stateinterventionism by information power, which is depicted and interpreted in his radical and controversial art works.
He has studied cinema, theatre, electronics, philosophy, design and visual communications. He graduated in 2005 in Drama, Art and Music Studies at the University of Turin, meanwhile he has collaborated with many other pivotal figures of net-art and media-art scene like Bruce Sterling, Alessandro Ludovico, Stewart Home, Ubermorgen.com and RTMark.

Professional practice
Recently he has been working on “Recombinant Fiction” experimental storytelling, in which actors and audience combine in order to present a plot using several media and stages. This has offered the opportunity to theorize a new genre of cross-media format and create two projects based on it: “The Big Plot” and “Drowning Prosperously”. He presented this thoery and its projects in Courtauld Institute in London, Laboral in Gjion, National Museum of Contemporary Art athens, STRP Festival and many others media-art events.
Examples of successful projects – created in conjunction with Alessandro Ludovico and Ubermorgen.com - have been centered on net-art and conceptual art. Called “Amazon-Noir” and “GWEI” respectively, these art pieces have received several prizes and have been exhibited in many exhibitions around the world. At the beginning of 2008, Amazon-noir won the second prize at the Transmediale festival in Berlin.
In the last few years he has been invited to several conferences to lead presentations, lectures and workshops. Such conferences include: ‘Trees Sex Girl’ project presentation with Stewart Home and Tatiana Bazzichelli in Bergen; ‘Track my Poem’ at NABA university in Milan with Bruce Sterling and ‘Manufacturing Consent’ both organized by Share Festival; and many other festivals and galleries in Germany, Serbia, Spain, UK and Austria.
He has been organizer and fundraiser for street-art exhibitions. During these exhibitions a street was blocked and tens of artists converged and freely built their art pieces in the public urban environment. This kind of exhibition has been set up in London, Milan and Turin. Hundreds of artists were involved and several media covered the events. He has worked in live vjing, performing during electronic music concerts. Through this experience he consolidated live visual manipulation shows and linear video editing skills.
As an activist against NATO-militarism, he was the editor of a major international web portal, which concentrated mainly on global campaigns against the expansion of NATO. He organized global cyber-strikes (NetStrike) to protest against enlargements of NATO. In 2002 he was investigated by the Department of National Defense of both the USA and Canada. This concerned the global campaign "Anti-NATO Day," an event that was covered by media in Japan, Belarus and was studied by The Eisenhower Institute in the USA.
He has been a wed-designer freelance for ten years, gaining international experience and clients. The majority of this work has been as a consultant for advertising agencies, firms and public istitutions. As a teacher, he isoccupied with web design for public and private schools. Meanwhile he developed various Open Source software for web applications, which have been shared with many developers and users.

Poetic
He is a tactical media artist. He hacks and orchestrates media through videos, coding, websites, social media, printed media, interventions in public spaces, characters enacted by actors, audience participation and accurate researches, in order to create edifying narratives, controversial provocations and tacking social issues. The aim of the artist is to address the power of media beyond the single language and device, focusing on the major matter of media: how specific arrangements of information can construct, describe and shape reality and hence influence the society.
Cirio explores how information is such of magmatic material that can be shaped. He sculpts information by fabricating narratives, processing data and contextualizing contents. He creates unusual structures of information, as like sculptures, in Cirio's works the layers of the media complexity are organically composed, displaying his sophisticated structures able to rise critical discourses and show unexpected beautiful forms.
